The door knockers of S. Gimignano

We were in holiday in Toscany/Italy and visited San Gimignano. We took a lot of nice photos. I thought their focus on nice door knockers seemed interesting so I recommend the slideshow of 22 pictures.

Some shows released under CC by German TV Show

NDR (German) offers it’s shows from Zapp and Extra 3 under a by-nc-nd 2.0 CC-license. That means that you are allowed to share the shows (e.g. by uploading it to youtube at. al.) if you attribute the work, do not release it for commercial reasons and do not alter the show. This is a very

Smart heating? Anyone?

We have a lot of dumb radiators in Germany. And I bet everyone else in Europe and the US, too. They all look the same: They have a thing you turn to make it warmer or colder. But they depend on you, and they don’t do anything when you are not at home. We don’t

New Ubuntu Linux is out for download

Cory Doctorow:

It’s a good day for downloads! In addition to Thunderbird 2, there’s the newest version of Ubuntu, “Feisty Fawn.” Ubuntu is the free, easy version of GNU/Linux that runs on practically any hardware and is so easy to set up and install that it can be administered by regular users. I’ve been using Ubuntu exclusively since last October and I love it (and yes, I’m still working on my long-promised Ubuntu article. Classes end soon — I’ll have some more time once I’ve turned in my students’ grades).

Feisty Fawn has something from everyone: server virtualization enhancements, better video- and audio-editing, a Windows desktop migration tool to ease the pain of switching, easier multimedia codecs, and easy print- and file-sharing over WiFi.

HANNSpree 32-Inch 720p HDTV Doesn’t Look Weird At All

hannsvibewhite_12-1.jpgHANNSpree, maker of TV sets in the shape of baseballs, French fry containers and worse, is now shipping its line of HDTVs that actually look normal. This 32-inch HANNSvibewhite widescreen LCD, first teased late last year, gives you 720p goodness at a price that’s not entirely unreasonable: $1,150.

Those two speakers can either cling to the bottom or be removed, so you can lift and separate them just like a Playtex living bra. Hmm, a bra-shaped TV—are you reading this, HANNSpree?

Maybe that $1,150 price tag is a rip, though. Hey, if you want a great deal on a HANNSpree set, you’ll like this one better, a 32-incher without the fancy speakers for $500. – Charlie White

Radio-Controlled Car Goes Full Size, Man Inside

Radio-controlled cars are toys, right? Well, not this one, where the crew of the Brit TV series TopGear runs a full-sized radio-controlled car through a muddy obstacle course. Looks like it’s not easy to control, as the two guys try it out on each other. Must be a weird feeling! – Charlie White
